Malting news Western Europe: Western Europe expected to expand its malting capacity, maintain exports stable

Western Europe produces just over 15% of the world’s total beer output which ranks the region in the 3rd place after Asia and North America, RMI Analytics said in their early June report.

The historical importance of the region in both brewing and distilling is undisputed, but at the same time the growth prospects of this mature market are limited. This is evidenced by AB InBev’s Q1 results where Europe’s beer volume growth struggled and this is a longer-term trend and challenge for the region (and other mature markets).

When the malting aspect is considered, the importance of Western Europe is even greater, with nearly 1/3 of global malting capacity residing in this region. This malting capacity footprint is a combination of commercial and vertical brewer/distiller maltsters, which has been built upon a strong fundamental barley supply chain, the analysts said.

Since Western Europe holds 1/3 of malting capacity but only 15% of beer production (and whisky demand for malt), the result is a sizeable requirement for the region to export malt globally. Geographically, the region is well positioned to fulfil the growing malt demand in emerging markets (e.g. Asia, Africa, South America) and roughly 26% of the region’s malt is exported.

Western Europe is expected to expand malting capacity through 2027, while at the same time the export percentage remains rather stable throughout this region. This illustrates the region’s ability to maintain export levels to emerging markets, for example, despite increases in malt capacity, the RMI analysts said.
